GREGOR Science Meeting at MPS

Scientists from Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic met in January 2016 to present and discuss the scientific outcome of the observing season 2015. A wealth of high-quality data sets were presented, covering many facets of the solar atmosphere: from quiet regions to sunspots, from the deep photosphere up to chromospheric heights. The research presented during this meeting will soon be published in a special issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics. more

Depth-dependent global properties of a sunspot

A novel inversion technique developed at MPS allowed to investigate the 3-dimensional structure of a sunspot in the photosphere of the Sun. The physical conditions (temperature, flow velocities, magnetic fields) were analyzed in unprecedented resolution using data from the spectropolarimeter onboard the Japanese Hinode spacecraft. A striking similarity between the sunspot umbra and the dark lanes (spines) of the penumbra could be identified. more
