High-resolution. high cadence polarimetry with FSP

April 08, 2016
The recently developed prototype of the Fast Solar Polarimeter (FSP) acquired high-resolution, high-cadence polarimetric measurements of a pore showing the potential of the instrument to detect fast-evolving, small-scale solar features.

The FSP is a novel instrument developed by MPS in collaboration with the MPG semiconductor lab (see the FSP site for further information). The superior specifications of FSP in terms of duty cycle, noise and frame rate; allow it to acquire 100 full-Stokes measurements per second and render it ideal to perform high spatial resolution imaging of fast solar features that present strong polarimetric signatures. The images showed here illustrate such regime by comparing the results of a pore measurement obtained with FSP to those that would be obtained with a slower polarimeter.
