Curriculum Vitae

Research Interests:

I am a physicist currently working on the plasma environment of the Earth’s magnetosphere and its interactions with the Sun via the solar wind. I originally started by analyzing data from rocket-borne experiments launched from the Canadian Arctic into the magnetospheric cusp. Moving to Germany in 1978, I worked on energetic particle data from the ISEE-1 and -2 satellites. I then worked on data from ISEE-3 while visiting ESTEC (1983-1984), investigating the far terrestrial magnetotail, and further as this spacecraft was directed to visit a comet. Returning to MPAe (later MPS) I became heavily involved with the Cluster Mission, taking over the PI-ship of the RAPID energetic particle spectrometer, which I continued to carry out even after my official retirement in 2012.

Employment:

Since 2012: retired, but continuing work on RAPID/Cluster activities in the frame of a part-time contract
Since 2001: PI of the instrument RAPID (Research with Adaptive Particle Imaging Detectors) onboard the Cluster Mission to the Earth’s magnetosphere
1984-2012: scientific staff member of MPS, head of the RAPID/Cluster Team at MPS and responsible for archiving of RAPID science data
1983–1984: Visiting scientist with the Space Science Dept. of ESTEC, ESA, Noordwijk, The Netherlands
1978–1983 Stipendium at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Aeronomie, Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany (which was renamed to MPS in 2005 and moved to Göttingen in 2014)
1975–1978: Research Associate at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, Canada.
1975–1978: Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, England

Education:

1973: Ph.D., University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, Thesis title: "Nuclear Orientation Studies at Low Temperatures", Supervisor: Dr. P. W. Martin
1968: B.Sc., Physics Honours, Bishop’s University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada
