MPS Seminar: A possible mechanism of a guide magnetic field increase due to kinetic effects of ion dynamics in the magnetotail current sheet
A possible mechanism of a guide magnetic field increase due to kinetic effects of ion dynamics in the magnetotail current sheet Abstract: Statistical studies of CLUSTER observations of the Current Sheet (CS) structure and ion dynamics under the presence of a strong guide magnetic field (By-field) in the Earth magnetotail allow us to suggest a mechanism, which  could be responsible for the enhancement of the By- field. We revealed the presence of the north-south asymmetry in ion ejections after their nonadiabatic interaction with the CS. This results in the north-south asymmetry in spatial distribution of ion density and electric current density. The north-south asymmetry in ion ejections from the CS generates a system of oppositely directed electric currents (Jx) in the plasma sheet, which, in turn, leads to the enhancement of the By field in the center of the CS. This mechanism demonstrates the influence of "fine" kinetic effects on the magnetic configuration observed at meso-scales.
