Professional Societies
Become a member. Network with colleagues. Disseminate your science. Get and post announcements and job advertisements in your field. Nominate or be nominated for prestigeous prizes and awards.
Professional societies connect scientists in a specific field of research and serve their communities through various activities. One highly visible type of activity may include the organisation of annual or otherwise recurring meetings in the form of a scientific conference series in conjunction with regular general assemblies. Further activities might include the representation of the field's interests towards science policy decision makers, the organisation of additional scientific meetings or workshops, the publication of scholarly journals, circulars and newsletters, the dissemination of scientific results to a broader audience, awarding of prizes, fellowships or travel grants, running field-specific job boards, offering training courses or workshops, providing networking structures for special interest groups such as regional hubs, particular sub fields, or e.g. the demographic of early career researchers. Professional societies often accept as members researchers in as well as advocates or communicators for the field they represent. They frequently rely on member engagement to make their activities and community services happen. Community activities such as conference organisation, job boards, or newsletters are nevertheless often available to the community at large, without requiring membership. It is worthwhile to check out which of the various services on offer might be useful at which career stage.
