The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Göttingen conducts fundamental research in the field of solar system physics. With its approximately 300 staff members, it is one of the leading institutes in the field of solar physics and planetary research. In particular, the institute is involved in numerous international space missions.

The institute invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) in Planet Formation Theory.

Planet formation theory is currently undergoing rapid development driven by numerous exoplanets detections, the progress in their characterization, as well as the observations of the young stellar disks, where planets form.

The successful applicant will, in collaboration with the other group members, develop computational models of planet-forming processes such as dust coagulation, planetesimal formation via the streaming instability, and planetary core growth by planetesimal and pebbleaccretion. Prior experience in protoplanetary disk or planet formation modeling is highly desirable.

This position is offered within the project "Formation of planetary building blocks throughout timeand space" led by Dr. Joanna Drążkowska funded by the ERC Starting Grant PLANETOIDS.

Your tasks

  • Develop numerical models of dust evolution in protoplanetary disks and planetesimal formation both independently and in collaboration with other group members as well as external collaborators
  • Prepare research papers for publication
  • Present research findings on seminars and conferences

You should have

  • Ph.D. in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or related field
  • Understanding of the state-of-the-art in planet formation theory
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with Linux/UNIX environment and high-performance computing. Preferably, some experience in protoplanetary disk or planetformation modeling (such as hydrodynamic, magnetohydrodynamic, or N-bodymodels)
  • Very good command of English (min B2-Level)

Employment conditions

  • Remuneration is according to the German public salary scale TVö D-Bund E13
  • Social security benefits are in accordance with the public service regulations
  • Funding for publications and travel and access to computational resources areavailable

The position is available in the Planetary Department for a period of 3 years with the possibility of extension for one additional year. The starting date is flexible any time in 2023.
