Planetary Group Seminar: The formation of planetesimals, Rosetta, and future missions (J. Blum)
The question of how the first gravitationally bound bodies, the so-called planetesimals, formed in the young Solar System has not been completely answered. By comparing model predictions with observations, the recently completed Rosetta mission might help us to decide which of the two competing planetesimal-formation scenarios formed the nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (or its progenitor body). Future missions to comets will greatly benefit from Rosetta's observations by performing dedicated investigations concerning the origin of comets.
