The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS), Göttingen, invites applications for a Database Software Developer to work in the PLATO Data Center (PDC) team.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is the M3 mission of ESA’s Cosmic Vision program, which aims to detect and characterize a large sample of exoplanets and their host stars. The PDC at MPS will provide ground support for the validation and calibration of the PLATO observations, for the processing of the Data Products. A PDC Database will be implemented at the MPS, which will be the central data exchange hub for all European PLATO data centres.

In your role you will contribute to activities under Work Package 31 “PDC System Architecture and Management”.

Your Tasks

  • develop the PDC Database system
  • contribute to the production of PDC technical documentation

Your Profile

  • Master of Science degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field
  • expertise in Java, Java Native Interface, Linux/Unix, Swing/Abstract Window Toolkit, Eclipse
  • experience with databases, development tools (e.g. Jenkins, QF‐Test, Redmine, svn/git), Python,C, JavaFX
  • experience in space missions, scientific projects, system administration and Fortran is desirable
  • good command of the English Language

Our offer

The position is available as early as 16th October 2017, but a later start date is negotiable. The position is full‐time and initially approximately 18 months; the possibility of extensions is contingent upon performance and project funding. Remuneration will be in accordance with the German Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD), up to E group 13, depending on the candidate’s profile. Social security benefits are in accordance with the public service regulations.
